3rd Line of Defense

- The 3rd Line of defense is specific and is adapted by the individual (they are not born with it)
- It can be mediated by antibodies or lymphocytes
- A Major player is lymphocytes (T- cells and B –cells) as they recognise invading cells or particles, react to the particular invasion, and make a memory of the pathogen that entered the body so it can respond quickly if there is a secondary invasion.
- There are two different types of responses that are triggered by antigens and that occur in the 3rd line of defense
- Humoral response: B-cells do not directly attack the foreign pathogen and instead secretes antibodies
